Contemporary courtyard

The client wanted to transform an inherited overgrown garden into a space where they could enjoy entertaining

The client moved into a new property and they inherited a garden full of shrubs that had not been maintained for a considerable time.

A garden magazine feature served as the inspiration for this fresh start. A courtyard space with planters was discussed and Smiths Landscapes were asked to design and build this contemporary and modern space. The client had a good eye for design and clear idea of the colour palette they wanted. The design was approved and the significant clearance phase commenced during the Autumn with the build running through the Winter in between a conservatory extension. The build comprised two large planters with porcelain copings and slate cladding. Millboard decking complimented the Italian porcelain paving from London Stone laid to a bespoke design.

Some of the existing shrubs were retained and relocated with two new trees; a Sorbus hupehensis 'Pink Pagoda' and a mature Amelanchier laevis 'Snowflakes' being planted to add structure and height to the garden.

Jenny in Mortimer said "I am very happy with my smart new courtyard garden. Jason kindly listened to my ideas and drew up a clear plan. He and his colleagues were very polite, considerate and helpful throughout the project. Jason's careful planning and attention to detail has ensured that the patio, the decking and the planters are all very neat and pleasing to look at."
